Romario is the archetype of the child from a favela of a large Brazilian city that accesses the star status with world football. Born in the district of Jacarezinho a January 29, 1966, the young Romario in football has found a way to escape a hard life on the margins of society.
It marks his first goals in the colors of a formation of Vila da Penha, Estrelinha. He is quick to point out, getting a first transfer to Olaria and a contract with Vasco da Gama. In the Rio team, the man reported his address in the final meters, allowing it to win his first title in club and national team. In 1985 he received his first international crown, the South American Championships Juniors, won Paraguay's land. In 1987 and 88, it removes twice the championship with Vasco in Rio, which allows it to integrate the national team finalist at the Seoul Olympics, he finished top scorer. This success earned him a number of proposals from Europe, Romario finally agreeing to bind to the PSV, with whom he won six titles in five seasons.Romario is then transferred to FC Barcelona begins the golden age of Brazilian striker. Under the command of Johan Cruyff, Romario is the idol of all the people of Barcelona, to whom he offers a Spanish league in the legendary "Dream Team" of Barcelona. Brazilian striker is clearly still the top scorer of the competition. It also reaches a final C1 lost against AC Milan.
At the top of his game, Romario has finally a chance to shine during a FIFA World Cup after playing a passive role in the World Cup in Italy in 1990. Despite a physical problem, it was included in the group, but had hardly been able to come into play in the United States, by contrast, Romario has a physical condition that allows it to spread its full potential. Scored five goals, he is the principal architect of the first victory auriverde World Cup after 24 years of waiting.
He wanted to be the best player in the world. His will was answered in 1994 when FIFA awarded him, logically, the title of player of the year. He thus became the first Brazilian to seize (the distinction was created in 1991, and assigned successively to Lothar Matthäus, Marco van Basten and Roberto Baggio).
Three years later, he won a second title with the Seleção: the Copa America. Unfortunately it does not participate in his third World Cup. At the 1998 World Cup, he has the misfortune to be injured just a month before the competition. In 2002, due to irreconcilable differences with Scolari, the coach at the time, it is not retained in the team that won its fifth world championship title.For the 2006 season, Romario aligned with Miami FC, a club to expand the first division of the United Soccer Leagues. In November 2006 he signed a contract for four games with the team Adelaide United, Australian club. Beginning in January 2007, Romario decided to return to the club that made him famous, Vasco da Gama. It must however wait for the approval of FIFA, which prohibits a player to normally operate in more than two different teams during a season. The agreement obtained only in February 2007, he scored three goals in 12 minutes after entering the field against Volta Redonda.
He put an end to his career in April 2008.
In August 2009, Romario has announced that it would come out of retirement to play with the America Football Club of Rio de Janeiro
